The OBJECTIVE

This project involved relocating Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s entire operation from multiple sites across the West Midlands and Black Country to a newly built, purpose-designed facility in Shropshire. This strategic move consolidated their operations under one roof, enhancing efficiency and collaboration across departments. Ian Smith Interiors team was tasked with developing a full design programme that would ensure the new space met the charity’s functional requirements while also reflecting their values and identity. The goal was to create an environment that supported the life-saving work they do and fostered a cohesive, productive work culture for their team.

The brief covered all key areas of the new facility, including workspaces for various departments, management offices, meeting rooms, and specialised training areas. In addition, the design had to incorporate branding elements and create a welcoming atmosphere for visitors, partners, and donors. The new site would also feature breakout spaces and staff welfare areas, supporting employee well-being and collaboration. The comprehensive design approach ensured that the new headquarters provided a modern, efficient, and inspiring space for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s growing operation.

The Solution

Ian Smith Interiors engaged in in-depth discussions with the Midlands Air Ambulance management team to understand the intricate requirements of a fully operational airbase. This comprehensive engagement allowed the team to explore the specific needs of every division within the charity, including air staff, support staff, administration, sales, and the entire management team. By gathering insights from each department, the interiors team was able to ensure that the design addressed operational efficiency, safety protocols, and the unique workflows of the organisation. This collaborative approach laid the groundwork for a well-rounded design that would support the charity’s mission and enhance overall functionality.

Working closely with the appointed architects, Ian Smith Interiors produced a comprehensive package of ideas that reflected the diverse needs of the client. This collaborative effort culminated in a final design that was both practical and inspiring. To ensure a seamless transition to the new space, our team implemented a structured installation plan that involved close coordination with all site trades, including contractors, electricians, and IT specialists. This meticulous planning and execution allowed for timely completion of the project, resulting in a successful opening that met the charity’s operational goals and provided a modern, efficient airbase for their critical services.

We have worked with Ian Smith Interiors on several projects over the past 4 years. Their attention to detail and focus on delivering a successful installation is one of the main reasons we continue to work together.
